By now everyone knows that eating your greensis an important part of a healthy diet. They are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre and are also low in calories.  Eating a diet rich in Plant based foods can offer numerous health benefits including reduced risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and mental declineand it may also help reduce your environmental impact.

There is no proof that humans must eat meat, dairy and eggs to thrive and be healthy. This is a learned behaviour which has become so mundane and ingrained into many people since birth that they don’t even question

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF A PLANT-BASED DIET 

Eating a Plant Based diet has so many wonderful benefits such as reducing the risk of many dietary based diseaseslike some types of Cancers, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Obesity, Heart Disease and Inflammation. It can also help fight Depression, Sluggishness, Bloating and Dermatological issues to name a few.

Well balanced Plant Based diets are rich in Protein, Iron and Calcium as well as other essential vitamins and minerals and are naturally high in Fibre which helps control blood sugar levels and also more well known to help prevent or relieve constipation and normalise bowel movements.

When you eat, you are either fighting disease or feeding it. Food has the power to heal, prevent and cure disease with no side effects unlike that of the pharmaceutical drug companies. Studies show that being overweight and having a poor diet can cause nearly one third of all Cancers.

Not only will you be glowing on the outside on a Plant Based diet you will feel great from the inside too, as eating a wide range of nutritionally rich fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes has the power to restore your body and mind and eliminate cravings as well as keeping the pounds off.

Plant based diets are naturally low in saturated fat and HDL (bad cholesterol) which is found in Animal proteins. Eating a diet high in saturated fats elevates cholesterol and increases the risk of heart disease and obesity.

WHAT CAN I EAT?

There are over 20,000 edible species of plants in the world so dinner time will never be boring.

On a Plant Based diet you have instant access to all Essential Nutrients vital for good health. The key for optimal health is eating a balanced diet consisting of a variety of raw foods. By raw I mean food in their natural state unprocessed and unpackaged foods, fresh and organic when possible.

AN ETHICAL CHOICE

Going Plant Based is also an ethical choice, not only for the animals but also for the planet. The environmental impact the animal agricultural industry has on the planet is devastating, It is responsible for more than 56 billion animal deaths per year, not even including fish and other marine life. When you purchase animal products you are creating a demand for this to keep happening and by avoiding them altogether you save approximately 100 animals lives, 1.3 million gallons of water, 16,500 pounds of grain as well as saving the rainforest and carbon emissions.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

The environmental consequences of the animal industry are huge! Livestock require a vast amount of food mainly corn and soy, which are also one of the most genetically modified products (GMO’s) which in studies have had adverse health effects in rats including tumors and even premature death.

If we stopped farming livestock for consumption, we would have enough food to feed the world over four times. This is because of the vast quantity of grains being grown which are used to feed the cattle and the land space in which they are taking up could be used to grow food for humans.

Approximately 5.6million acres of land in Brazil is used to grow soybeans for animals and a large percentage of their people are living below the poverty line, struggling to feed their families when all this food is being wasted on the animals which are only being farmed in such large quantities because of the demand people have created for them.

The animal agriculture industry is responsible for more than 30% of the world water consumption. In America alone, 34 trillion gallons of water are used to produce meat and it takes 2500 gallons of water just to produce 1 pound of beef as opposed to 501 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of lentils which has about 18g of good quality lean protein 1g of fat and high in iron.

SAVE OUR PLANET

Not only is the animal agriculture industry the leading cause for deforestation in the Amazon rainforest and habitat destruction, around 1 acre of land is cleared per second, it is also responsible for 51% of the greenhouse emissions. That is more destructive than the whole transportation sector of the world combined. This includes emissions from boats, cars, trains, planes and trucks.

AND THE OCEANS

Animal farming has also resulted in ocean dead zones. This is due to the nitrates running off the land from the manure and often into rivers which is carried downstream into the ocean. The manure is high in nitrates which leads to excessive growth of algae and depletes the water of oxygen which can lead to species extinction.

Until the demand for animal products decreases we are facing a very grim future. You can help combat this situation by shifting to a more Plant Based diet.

ACIDITY VS ALKALINITY

Our bodies need to be slightly more alkaline than acidic for optimal health. When our bodies are too acidic this is when disease can manifester and present itself. Achieving an optimal PH balance on a Plant Based diet is a lot more simple than that of a omnivore diet. This is because meat, eggs and dairy are acidic and processed meats are considered to be as carcinogenic as tobacco smoke.

PH or Alkaline diets consist mainly of whole foods and avoid processed sugar, alcohol and animal products. When your body is too acidic it steals calcium from your bones increasing the likelihood of osteoporosis. Our bodies ideal PH balance is 7.30-7.45. You can test your own PH balance with litmus paper by testing your saliva or urine first thing in the morning upon awakening.

Not only does Dairy increase your bodies PH balance to acidic, it also contains BGH – bovine growth hormone which is responsible for the quick growth of a calf to an adult. This can also be responsible for the onset of early puberty.

DAIRY IS SCARY

The dairy industry is ruthless and responsible for the death of countless male calves as they are deemed as useless to the farmer and are often disposed of. Because of the constant milking process, many cows develop mastitis which is an infection of the mammary tissue and requires antibiotics which then leaches out into the milk.

Again, we do not question why we are drinking the milk of another mammal because this is a learnt behaviour and has become so normal. unless you are a baby cow, cows milk is not natural for you to drink.

BUT ITS NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM

In this day and age it is relatively easy to make the switch to a plant based diet as there are so many well balanced delicious plant-based recipes and bloggers sharing their top tips on how to stay healthy on a Vegan or Plant based diet.

Making the switch and moving away from animal products has the power to reverse the damage, even if you are not 100% committed just yet to changing your diet, limiting the amount of animal products you consume will have a positive effect on your wellbeing and it won’t be long before you start noting the change within yourself and commit to being Plant Powered full time. If you are not quite there yet then even limiting or excluding your meat consumption just one day a week can have a positive effect. – Try Meatless Mondays for example.
